Physiology of Fear

Myodynamic Biofeedback, a term coined in 2005 by Dr. Steven Anthony, an advanced instructor for PSYCH-K, reflects years of performing functional capacity testing for the State of Texas as a Designated Doctor for the Texas worker’s compensation commission and years of previous experience in the robotics engineering industry. Using specific muscles, this biofeedback process (see research) helps detect “systemic load” reflecting overall stress. The extrapolation from the data collected from the testing can reveal the presence of stress and associated causal potency with regard to the resident algorithms or unconscious programs/ideals/beliefs presently manifesting in disease, depression and other internal life-challenging obstacles. The method of testing is easily explained and taught to any individual desiring to embrace a greater level of awareness as to their current state of reactivity and adaptation to internal and external environmental “triggers” to their “operating system” unconscious mind directly affecting the autonomic nervous system and response to “life” as a whole.

Addictions and other measures of coping with stress from auto destructive programs can be addressed by testing the level of energy available to muscles in response to self-referential declarative statements. These declarations trigger physiological reactions reflecting congruence or incongruence at the unconscious level. The ensuing results of the agreement or disagreement with these declarations' “stress,” systemic load, is easily detected by apparent change in levels of strength of the muscle. The law of conservation of energy is at play here when stress is triggered by anything that threatens survival. When an individual is falsely accused, the accusation is processed and compared to the individual’s perceived reality, and if found incongruent, may trigger the “fight or flight" response. This “fear response,” although essential to survival, is designed to be short-lived and the expectation is that when the threat is resolved the individual will return to homeostasis. To better understand the significance of the “fight or flight” response, it is necessary to address the physiology of fear.

The “fear factor” is such a powerful process that it deserves dissemination and greater understanding. Research in brain development and neurophysiology addresses the importance of the HPA axis. The amygdala is an almond shaped mass of nuclei located deep within the temporal lobes, medial to the hypothalamus and adjacent to the hippocampus, and is the storage location for memories associated with survival, fear, fight or flight challenges. The amygdala, as part of the limbic system, is triggered by associative real or perceived threats and initiates the HPA response. The hypothalamus, pituitary and adrenal cortex are stimulated in a cascade response to stored programs being triggered by either actual threats or auto-actuated stimuli, therefore resulting in autonomic accommodation to the need for survival. The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis is a significant part of the neuroendocrine system and controls reactions to stress and regulates digestion, the immune system and energy distribution. It is the disproportionate appropriation of energy in over reaction to actual or perceived threats to survival (accusations, incongruent self-referential statements, etc.) that leads to habitual undesirable outcome.

How to directly influence the H.P.A. axis:

Using the PSYCH-K process, a method incorporating biofeedback through muscle testing and whole-brain integration methodology, it is possible to establish a balanced response potential and quell systemic over reaction to conflicts arising between conscious perception and unconscious stored references or programmed beliefs.

The PSYCH-K two-day workshop focuses on the unique attributes of the conscious and unconscious minds. The course offers insights to split-brain research and implications addressing our tendencies to default to fear-based reactions affecting our abilities to access our desired full-response potential to life’s challenges. The overall goal of the instruction is to develop skills in the application of whole-brain techniques in the desire to resolve differences between the conscious and unconscious minds thereby leveraging a dynamic potential, which results in a desired balanced response in life. The conservation of energy achieved through appropriate accommodation to stressors, perceived or actual, leads to homeostasis and increased availability to respond to actual systemic and psychological challenges. In essence, the “knee jerk” reaction is abated.

Addictions, coping mechanisms that manifest in life-threatening behaviors, are directly addressed during the PSYCH-K process by accessing stress detected through muscle testing while using pertinent self-referential statements. Research (go to research page) indicates significant differences in muscle strength when addressing congruent and non-congruent self-referential statements. The survey of unconscious beliefs allows for an overall picture of the subject's life and accommodations to survival. Thus, an effective approach using whole-brain integration techniques allows for a “rewriting of perceptions” at the unconscious level. This reprogramming of aberrant perceptions or beliefs helps to resolve tendencies to overact to life’s stressors and situations and exhibit reasonable responses to daily challenges.

A brief description of a PSYCH-K session may include a brief history of the presenting problem or desired goal. The facilitator then introduces the subject to the muscle testing procedure and assists the client in experiencing the differences in muscle strength when asked to imagine something desirable or pleasant and subsequently something undesirable. The difference in strength response to each statement is easily discernable. Then the subject is tested while stating a truth and stating an untruth, usually a given name then a false name. Again, the difference in muscle response is noted. This is part of the calibration procedure and gives the subject a conscious reference of the validity of the testing procedure.

The subject then tests a declarative statement addressing something they wish to change in their life. The test reveals whether the statement elicits stress at the unconscious level. A weak muscle response indicates disagreement at the unconscious level and a need to proceed with a whole-brain integrative process to dispel the stress. After the procedure, the subject repeats the original tests and finds the muscle response has changed. A successful session results in a strong response to the original statement and verifies agreement at the unconscious level. The abatement of stress concerning the subject’s goals removes underlying resistance to achieving their life objectives and any physical complications that may have surfaced as a result of stress.

The whole-brain procedures and testing skills are delivered in a two-day course. The skill level of the students is developed during the course as well as the ability to facilitate an individual in developing clear, concise self-referential statements suitable for testing. The PSYCH-K process is very revealing and is a painless, enjoyable way for people to be curious about where their lives are at present and a way to change the “operating system” in supporting the way they want their lives to be. The results are individuals accepting responsibility for the way their lives have turned out and taking control of how their lives can be. PSYCH-K is a major process for conflict resolution. The conflicts between the conscious and unconscious minds are resolved and life becomes more harmonious.
